Play the Game: Samantha V

Play the Game

by Samantha V

Sung to the music of "Ugly Boy" by Die Antwoord

I keep sayin I ain't playin

But the cards in front of me are callin my name and

Every time I think I'm gonna get out

I get pulled back in without a doubt

Drug in

Done in

This game I play but I never win

Never seem to find an end

I lie to myself and pretend

Things are fine in my mind

Finger constantly stuck on rewind

But life don't work that way

There's no pause or skip, only play

Eyes blind, hands tied

Held captive by a demon inside

No matter how hard I try

It takes to much just to survive

No escape, is it fate?

Livin my life repeating mistakes

How far does the bottom go?

Maybe I'll never know.

Play the game

Don't even know my name

Think I'm going insane

Will life ever be the same?

Then a light, it ignites

Gives me the strength to keep up the fight

Get up and try again

I reach for the hands of my friends

I'm not sure what's in store

But together we're stronger than ever before

I see the hope in you

And I'm inspired to have hope too

I'll follow this new road

I'll trust that where you've gone I can go

I'll face another day

Forge a path in a new way

When I fall, I won't lose it all

I can't run yet before I crawl

Take things one day at a time

Seek and I shall find

Play the game

I'm figuring out my name

There IS a way to stay sane

And life won't be the same

My struggle

Your struggle

We find ourselves in trouble

But there's a better way

Face this brand new day

Hand in hand until we understand

Play the game

Now I know my name

Thank God I'm not insane

Now my life has changed

  • After a moment of quiet, readings of the Prayer for a Trusted Servant, our Intergroup Statement of Purpose and the Twelve Traditions we moved on to...

  • Chairperson Report

    • Motion to approve May IG Meeting minutes, with changes to be made:   Y - 9, N - 0, A -1

    • Plan stated by the Chair to meet with IG officers to discuss our Bylaws and complete our Service Role descriptions.

  • Special Election: Chris S, with a history of work at the Intergroup level over the past 3-4 years, having co-chaired last year’s Fall Gathering, to lend a hand on all In-reach activities was nominated as Inreach Co-chair. Motion passed unanimously.

  • Concerns about Smeetingchciago.com website were discussed again. Requests asking Smeetingschicago.com website manager to refer those interested in SLAA to our IG, as well as inform who manages this website, have not been responded to. After discussion, the Chair decided to remove this website from the IG website. Later in the week, the Chair consulted with IG officers and representatives to come to a consensus on this decision. The group conscience was in favor of removing smeetingschicago.com from IG website and the link was removed.

  • Website Facilitation Report

    • The website has been kept up to date on meeting changes.

    • Can we put the Zoom link to Intergroup Meetings up on the website? It will be added to New Business to be addressed.

  • Fiduciary Report

    • Formal Fiduciary Report may be found on our google drive, in the fiduciary folder.

    • Chase & Anthony are working on creating a better, easier to read and more comprehensive report on Googledocs Sheets.

    • Progress is being made on complete funding of all activities.

    • Now that the Annual Business Meeting (ABM)  has been moved to an online status, attendance will be very inexpensive ($185). It’s coming in August. There are openings for delegates from our local SLAA members to attend; but no voting will occur at this year’s ABM, except for the Board of Trustees.

    • The issue of loosening quarantine restrictions was raised. Some SLAA meetings are moving now to hybrid on-line/in-person status. Fiduciary Chair suggested creating cork-board/posterboard signage, notifying meeting attendees of the health limits to participation (e.g., do you have a fever?) that are generally accepted as protective measures at grocery stores and doctors offices. A discussion was held about the benefits of this suggestion. A motion was proposed to devote $100 to making three signs for meetings that are interested. Motion was approved unanimously. ALAA Meetings may request signage through the Intergroup website, Mailroom email (mailroom@slaachicago.org).

  • Inreach Report

  • Newsletter: Articles for the next Newsletter have been submitted and are being compiled with IG Meeting minutes and financial report. A draft of the Newsletter will be out this week for approval.

  • Summer Retreat update: A budget has been set, with a lower number of attendees expected due to concerns about Covid infection. Money has been allotted for infection protection gear. Liability insurance has been added to the budget. $5625 has been budgeted for the retreat.

    • Has the cost to attend the retreat changed? There’ll be only single room occupancies, so the fee would be $205 per person. Vote to approve the budget - unanimously approved.

    • Messaging about the Retreat: A copy of the Save-the-date message was shared; it emphasizes how we’ll take steps to safeguard against infection transmission. Can more specifics be included about health concern based safety-steps? This is only a save-the-date notice: more details will be written up and shared.

  • Fall Gathering. In-reach Co-chair, directing the Fall Gathering is beginning planning; northside Al-Anano Club has been contacted. Working towards a hybrid, in-person/on-line gathering is playing a part in how we’re considering handling events.

    • Date to be set for around October 24. Looking for a co-chair: Caitlyn volunteered to co-direct and was approved.

  • Prayer/Meditation Meetings: 8:30pm phone-in meetings will begin on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the week of June 29th.

  • Outreach Report: no time for report.

  • New Business: no time for report.

  • Meeting Representative Announcements

    • The 8:30pm Prayer/Meditation phone-in meetings will have a save-the-date     memo written up and sent out; mention it in your meetings.

    • Encourage IG donations via Venmo (@Augustine-fellowship)

    • Encourage members looking to do service to attend IG meeting.

    • Send out submissions to Newsletter.
