Searching and Fearless

The fourth step was frequently described to me as a “monster” or “the step I got stuck on” or something else negative. My experience with it was so overwhelmingly positive that I wanted to share.

As I dove into my resentments, listing them out then inventorying them, I realized that I was angry about a lot of things, a lot more than I expected. I always considered myself a patient, relaxed person. But as I looked at my growing grudge list, I couldn’t deny the facts in front of me. The anger and frustration were bubbling beneath the surface for years. At times it boiled over in the form of a fight or a road rage episode or cussing out a family member. Most of the time, I was acting out too much to feel it. The anger was there and facing the reality of it was a relief.

I felt uncomfortably aware of my imperfections and felt vulnerable writing these things down. And at the same time, there was a surge of growing self esteem. “I don’t have to lie and hide. I don’t have to be ashamed. I have issues with anger. That’s okay - I can work on it.”

As I shifted over to the fear inventory and the sex inventory, the uncomfortable, vulnerable feelings continued. Especially in the sex inventory. There were many women and acting out situations I was tempted to leave off of that list out of fear of being judged. Again and again in this process I was met with “me too” as I inventoried and discussed these things with my sponsor.

The final piece of the fourth step for me was a “take it to the grave list” where I was told to write down the things that I did that at one point I swore I would never tell anyone. With each one I wrote down, the walls of shame that kept me from looking the world in the eye crumbed down a bit more. The shame and pride that fuels my disease was diminished. I began to sense more and more love and true acceptance from my sponsor, my higher power, and myself. I’m so grateful for that.
