Came to Believe
I heard somewhere about the absolute necessity of putting God in God's rightful place in the universe. Putting God in God's rightful place is, I feel, my personal creation story (the real, actual, here-and-now creation of me) where God (from Step 2) comes to be “believe-able.” A true Higher Power is One that I CAN come to believe CAN restore me to sanity because, well, God is at last making me, and not I, God. The danger of my putting God in the center of this very small universe is that it can seem incredible, not credible, to do a Second Step. How can a God of my own making be a Higher Power? I may as well have (as I have had) my dreams or sexual fantasies be my higher power, or the next woman I use to make me feel complete. I am rescued in this conundrum by claiming membership in the fellowship of SLAA, where all come to believe in their own way and not only do I have to respect their spiritual journey, their work validates mine.

Light of a New Day

One way that I experience my higher power, often unexpectedly, is through experiences that bring me fully into the present. I am often closed off from being fully present by worrying about or just thinking about the future. Though it can certainly be useful and necessary at times to plan ahead, constantly being in this state deprives me of the opportunity to embrace an unexpected moment where I can experience stillness, reality as-is, and perhaps a communion with my higher power. It may not always be a happy moment, perhaps I may even feel deep sadness. But whatever emotion I feel in that moment, I feel full; I feel at peace with what is. Here is a glimpse into one of these experiences that I had while on an SLAA retreat a few years back. One morning I woke up a bit earlier than breakfast was set to begin. So I threw on a sweatshirt, grabbed a notebook and pen, and took a walk out Lake Michigan, which was just across the street from the retreat center. While looking out early morning light on the lake, I felt compelled to write something, perhaps a poem. This is what came forth from my pen:

Holy lake/ With waves that chase the grey of the new day rising/ Stilling souls that sit upon your rocky shore/ When did you first call to me?/ And when did we first stumble upon you?/ Thinking you an ocean perhaps/ Paint my soul blue-grey to match the sweet melancholy of your blessed new day/ Maybe this is growing up-making peace with the sadness at the center of life/ It's no use to fight it/ Rather invite it/ Like a dinner guest into the home/ And let it roam/ Let it clean out the dusty corridors of your heart/ Lord knows those corridors have never seen the light of day/ Even if it be just a half light of a half grey holy day- let it in/ Let it rock you to sweet serenity/ Let it break you and shake you 'till you are one with that holy lake again

-
January income and expenses to be looked at again, starting vs ending balances seem off
-
Events - Events are self supporting and not fundraisers, is there a way to have these be more fundraising events than just self supporting (last event netted $5). Prior focus was on connection vs raising money.
-
Request to break out money for the retreat to see if underwriting the cost is possible again to make it more affordable and offer more scholarships. Hannah to work with retreat and events co-chair. Insight from outside retreat showed price resistance at $365.
-
ABM costs will be reduced this year, can we repurpose some of the prudent reserve to the summer retreat.
-
Do we ensure that all meetings know or are doing a 40/60 split? Of excess money of prudent reserve, 60% goes to the local Intergroup and 40% goes to FWS.
